Trim Video

Set a start and an end and save just the part you need. Nothing is re-encoded, so quality stays the same, and the file never leaves your device.

MP4 · MOV · WebM · MKV — Your file is never uploaded; it is processed on this device only. No sign-up, no watermark, no limits.

How to trim a video

  1. Press “Choose a video file” and pick the video. MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV files work.
  2. Play the preview, pause where you want, and press “Use current position as start” and “Use current position as end”. You can also type the seconds.
  3. Press “Trim”. A download button appears shortly; the file is saved in the same format as the original.

Why the quality stays the same

Most online editors upload your video to a server and compress it again from scratch. That takes time, lowers quality a little each time, and free plans often add a watermark. This tool leaves the picture and sound data untouched and simply copies the part you chose into a new file. Because nothing is compressed again, the result looks and sounds exactly like the original, and even a clip several minutes long usually finishes in seconds.

The start may move slightly earlier

Video does not store every picture in full. It stores a full reference picture (a keyframe) at intervals and only the changes in between. To cut without re-encoding, the result has to begin on a keyframe, so the real start snaps to the keyframe just before the time you typed. For phone footage that is usually around a second; for screen recordings and broadcast captures it can be a few seconds. The end is cut at the time you set.

What it is good for

Good to know

You can use it for work material or family videos you would rather not send anywhere. After a one-time download of the editing engine (about 2.6 MB), everything happens inside your browser and the video is not transmitted. If you need a frame-exact cut or want to join several sections, you need an editor that re-encodes. To drop only the sound use Remove audio; to turn the section into a moving picture use the GIF maker.

Before you trim

Start and end are typed in seconds: 1 minute 30 seconds is 90, and 2 minutes 5.5 seconds is 125.5. Leave the end field empty to keep everything from the start point to the end of the video. Even when the preview cannot open a format, MP4, MOV and MKV files can still be trimmed by typing the numbers. Extras such as subtitle tracks and chapters are not carried over; only picture and sound are copied. The original file is not changed, so if the result is not right, adjust the times and trim again as often as you like. Very large files use a lot of memory, so a computer is more reliable than a phone for those.

FAQ

Does trimming lower the quality?

No. The original data is copied as it is without being compressed again, so picture and sound match the source.

Why is the start slightly different from what I typed?

A cut without re-encoding has to begin on a keyframe, so it snaps to the keyframe just before your time. The difference is usually about a second.

Is my video uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser and the file never leaves your device.

Which files can I trim?

MP4, MOV, M4V, WebM and MKV. The result is saved in the same format as the original.
