Save a Video Frame (Thumbnail Maker)
Pause the video and save that exact frame as a picture at full resolution, or at YouTube thumbnail size (1280×720). The file never leaves your device.
MP4 · MOV · WebM · MKV — Your file is never uploaded; it is processed on this device only. No sign-up, no watermark, no limits.
How to save a frame from a video
- Press “Choose a video file” and pick the video.
- Play the preview or drag the seek bar and pause on the frame you want.
- Choose a size: “Original size” keeps the video resolution, “1280×720” is the YouTube thumbnail size.
- Press “Save as JPG” or “Save as PNG”. The picture and a download button appear.
Why it is sharper than a screenshot
A screenshot of a playing video saves only what is on screen at that size. A small window gives a small picture, and the seek bar or caption button can end up in the shot. This tool takes the frame out of the video file at its original resolution. A 4K video gives a 3840×2160 picture with nothing else on top of it.
JPG or PNG?
JPG is small, which suits thumbnails, blogs and chats. YouTube accepts thumbnail files up to 2 MB, and a 1280×720 JPG almost always fits. PNG loses no quality, so it suits screen recordings full of text and pictures you plan to edit again in a photo editor. It is several times larger.
The 1280×720 thumbnail size
YouTube recommends thumbnails 1280 pixels wide and 720 tall (16:9). With this size the frame is filled to 16:9 around its center. A vertical video loses a lot from top and bottom, so pick a frame where the subject is in the middle.
Picking a good frame
- Choose a moment when motion pauses. Fast movement looks natural in video but blurry as a single picture. Use the “Back a little” and “Forward a little” buttons under the preview to move 0.04 seconds at a time and find the crispest moment.
- A clear expression and gaze stands out even at small thumbnail size. Avoid closed eyes or an awkward mouth shape.
- Leave room for text. If a title will go on the thumbnail, a frame with one empty side is easier to work with.
If you need a moving preview rather than one picture, use the GIF maker; if you are curious about income, try the YouTube money calculator.
Using the saved picture
The saved frame is an ordinary picture file you can use anywhere. In YouTube Studio, upload it in the thumbnail slot of the video details; in a blog or a product page, place it as a regular image. To add text or a border, open it as the background in a design tool such as Canva. The file name includes the time of the frame in seconds, so several frames from the same video stay easy to tell apart. Saving three or four candidates and viewing them side by side at small size makes it easier to choose the one that stands out in a real list.
