Extract Audio from Video
Save only the sound of a video as an audio file. Take it in original quality or as a WAV that opens anywhere; the file never leaves your device.
MP4 · MOV · WebM · MKV — Your file is never uploaded; it is processed on this device only. No sign-up, no watermark, no limits.
How to extract audio from a video
- Press “Choose a video file” and pick the video.
- Press “Extract in original quality” or “Extract as WAV”.
- Press the download button when it appears to save the audio file.
Two ways to save
Extract in original quality takes the sound data out of the video without compressing it again. There is no quality loss at all, it finishes in seconds and the file is small. The format follows the kind of sound inside the video. MP4 and MOV files from phones almost always carry AAC sound, which becomes an M4A file; WebM videos become an OGG file. M4A opens in the default players on iPhone, Android, Windows and Mac.
Extract as WAV unpacks the sound into uncompressed form. The file grows to about 10 MB per minute, but it opens without trouble in editing programs, transcription services and recording gear. Choose WAV when you need material for editing, and original quality when you just want to listen or send it. MP3 output is not offered.
What it is good for
- Listening to a recorded lecture or meeting — when the picture is not needed, an audio file is far smaller and easier to play on the move.
- Transcripts and subtitles — speech recognition services take audio files faster than video and you hit size limits less often.
- Keeping your own narration or performance — save the voice or music you recorded on video as a separate track.
- Reusing sound in an edit — take ambient sound or an effect out and lay it over another clip.
Good to know
Music and voices in videos made by other people are protected by copyright and personal rights. Use this on videos you shot yourself or have permission to use. If you need the sound of only one section, cut it first with Trim video and then extract. For the opposite, a video without sound, use Remove audio.
How large the file will be
A file extracted in original quality is exactly as large as the sound was inside the video. Phone videos usually carry 1 to 2 MB of sound per minute, so even an hour-long lecture becomes an audio file of a few dozen megabytes. WAV is uncompressed: about 10 MB per minute in stereo, around 600 MB for an hour. Converting a long video to WAV uses a lot of browser memory, so for anything over ten minutes original-quality extraction is the better choice. If a video has several audio tracks, the first one is taken. If it has no sound, the tool tells you so.
FAQ
Can I get an MP3?
MP3 output is not offered. You can save original quality (M4A or OGG) or WAV; M4A plays on most devices and apps just like MP3.
Is quality lost?
“Extract in original quality” takes the sound data out as it is, so nothing is lost. WAV is uncompressed as well.
Is my video uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser.
WAV does not work for my video.
WAV needs the browser to be able to decode that sound format. If it fails, use “Extract in original quality”.
